Have you ever got into the water and remembered you’ve still not sent off that postcard? Not a problem with this unique shore dive off the coast of Chatan which has a surreal underwater post box where you can do just this!
This is a great chilled out dive site where we can visit this post box sat in approximately 6 meters of water before heading off to see probably more soft coral than any other dive site here in Okinawa all of which is nice and shallow in depths for all divers between 5 and 20+ meters deep! Often quieter than many other sites in Okinawa which means that this coral is in lovely condition and shelters a large range of life from tiny nudibranchs and shrimp, to sea snakes, eels and some well-hidden octopus!
Horseshoe and "Toilet Bowl"
A lovely shore dive for the more adventurous and confident divers out there where we get in at the Toilet Bowl (so called for the currents if the wind is coming from the wrong direction, but don’t worry we won’t come here on these days!). Once in we descend on to some huge walls! It’s got pretty fan corals, often shrimp and nudibranch, scorpion fish and if you’re lucky then you can even find grey reef sharks and turtles passing by. For those who are very good on their air it is possible to make it to horseshoe rock where there are two tunnels full of dazzling damsel fish and a number of lion fish hovering around. As the entrance and exit of this site involves clambering over rocks with the equipment it means we are often the only divers on this great site however it does mean we require people to be confident carrying their own equipment.
A great site for those that have not been in the water for a while or would just like to build up their confidence before jumping in on some of the deeper dive sites around Okinawa. Based in northern Okinawa and named after a large rock which supposedly looks like a gorilla doing a karate chop, this shallow site has a maximum depth depending on the tide of about 10 meters!
Some lovely hard coral, with plenty of clownfish, sea cucumbers, damsel fish and the occasional cuttlefish or octopus hiding about makes this a great shallow site for those new to diving who want to avoid the crowds sometimes found at other sites. There are some nice atmospheric canyons to swim-thru which can make for some great photos and good preparation if you’re going to be joining us at some of our other sites like Manza or cape Hedo!
